Recent Vintage Sale

As I sit around after work, stressing about how I am not packed yet, letting my nails dry, I figured I'd do one more post before Viva since it has been a couple of weeks since my last post.  Only a few more days left to prepare!

A couple of weekends ago I went to an awesome vintage sale here on the island that I found out about from Modern Kiddo. You can read about how the sale went on this blog post. I brought three friends with me and we all scored! I thought I would not be making any more purchases before Viva but how could I pass up a vintage Kamehameha dress?! I also scored a beaded sweater and some vintage Levi’s. The jeans do not really fit me right but I could not pass them up for $10. Everything was priced really well. I found so much I had to put things back so I did not spend more than I brought. I look forward to any future sales these lovely ladies put on. Well worth going!

My two main treasures from the day...

Can never have too many beaded cardigans!

The Hop at the Elbo Room

A few weeks back we hit up the Elbo Room in San Francisco for The Hop. Deke Dickerson and Big Sandy both played. I had a great time being back at the Elbo Room again. Just like old times, but WAY more crowded! Makes sense since there are no longer shows there every week like there used to be when dX put on Speedy’s Wig City. I could not believe the line to get in upstairs was down the entire length of the downstairs bar! I had a blast and hope we can make it to DeMarco’s in Brisbane when these guys play again April 27th, this time with Red Meat for their 20th anniversary BBQ.

I did not get any good photos since I was too far away and it was super dark in there but I will include them here anyway.

Red linen dress I bought from
Relic Vintage on Haight Street last year

Had dinner at La Cumbre before the show

Can never get enough of that upside down solo...

By this point of the night it was impossible to get
a good shot of Big Sandy.  Oh well...

Viva Las Vegas '98

Since there is just 2 ½ weeks until Viva…

I was going through some of my old magazines and such and came across a program from the first Viva back in 1998. I was not there but a friend of mine went and brought it back for me. It is incredible to see how much it has grown over the years. I also went through a 1997 issue of Continental Restyling I have which includes a mention of the first Viva and how Tom Ingram was expecting 1,500 people. How many is it up to now?! So much fun looking back. I may have gotten rid of loads of stuff over the years but so glad I hung on to things such as these.

Program from VLV 1998!

The line up...

Issue of Continental Restyling
I picked up at Tower Records in '97

Viva tickets were $49.50 back then...

Some more pages from Continental Restyling...

I always swing by here when in London
(though they have since moved from Inverness St. to Parkway)

We used to go to Jiving Jamboree in Ealing in 2002 while staying in London
Wish we could have been there in '97 for this one!

Love the other articles in Continental Restyling...

Steve Cochran

I just watched the 1951 film Tomorrow Is Another Day with Ruth Roman and Steve Cochran. This was another one chosen by Eddie Muller and shown on TCM in January before Noir City in San Francisco. I really enjoyed this one and am now very interested in Steve Cochran. Sadly he died at age 48 in 1965, just 14 years after this film was made. In the conversation with Robert Osborne on TCM before the film, Steve Cochran was referred to by Eddie Muller as something along the lines of the 'noir Elvis.' Can’t remember exactly how it was phrased but I loved it! Also, from what I have learned, Morrissey (first name Steven) was named after him.

I’ll just let these photos speak for themselves…
